Mago de Oz has a long and complex history that spans more than three decades. The band was founded in 1988 by drummer Txus di Fellatio, who left his soccer career at Real Madrid to pursue his passion for music. He was inspired by bands like Iron Maiden, Queen, Deep Purple and Rainbow. The band's original name was Transilvania 666, but they changed it to Mago de Oz (Spanish for Wizard of Oz) after the famous novel by L. Frank Baum.
The band's debut album, Mago de Oz, was released in 1994 and sold only 150 copies. It was not until their second album, Jesus de Chamberi, a rock opera based on the life of Jesus Christ in modern Madrid, that they gained some recognition and popularity. Their breakthrough came with their third album, La Leyenda de la Mancha, a concept album inspired by the classic novel Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. The album featured one of their most iconic songs, Molinos de Viento (Windmills), which became an anthem for their fans.
Since then, Mago de Oz has released several albums that explore different themes and genres, such as Celtic mythology, social criticism, fantasy, horror and science fiction. Some of their most successful albums include Finisterra (2000), Gaia (2003), Gaia II: La Voz Dormida (2005), La Ciudad de los Arboles (2007) and Gaia III: Atlantia (2010). The band has also experimented with different musical influences, such as symphonic metal, power metal, folk metal and hard rock.
Mago de Oz has also faced many challenges and controversies throughout their career. The band has undergone several lineup changes, especially in the lead singer position. Jose Andrea, who was the vocalist from 1996 to 2011, left the band due to personal and artistic differences. He was replaced by Javier Dominguez Zeta, who is still the current singer. The band has also been accused of plagiarism by other artists and critics, such as Blind Guardian, Rata Blanca and WarCry. The band has denied these allegations and defended their originality and creativity.
Despite these difficulties, Mago de Oz has remained one of the most influential and popular bands in the Spanish rock scene. They have sold millions of albums worldwide and have performed in many countries and festivals. They have also received several awards and honors, such as the Latin Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album in 2010 for Gaia III: Atlantia. The band is still active today and has recently released their fourteenth studio album, Bandera Negra (Black Flag), in 2021. ec8f644aee
